About this book

Language: Bilingual in English and German

When we encounter an animal in nature, it triggers something in us; we feel a certain emotion in the presence of the other creature: amazement, adoration, fascination, and indeed, in some situations, fear and apprehension. But a brush with a deer, wild boar, or hare is no comparison to a rendezvous with a grizzly, lion, shark, or pod of whales. Amos Nachoum and Marko Dimitrijevic have experienced this hundreds of times in their combined 70 years as wildlife photographers. Now, for the first time, they are combining their award-winning photographs with previously unpublished photographs of the world's largest animals in one book. The two photographers, who are also friends, tell us what it is like to be out in the wild and look the world's biggest animals right in the eye.

The structure of the book's chapters is arranged based on human emotions such as amazement, admiration, fear, and love. In their book, Nachoum and Dimitrijevic bring us closer to the giant animals of our planet, and allow us to share what these two men feel during these encounters, helping us learn about ourselves when we do so.

Biography

Marko Dimitrijevic has spent most of his life photographing the beauty of the world and documenting the lives of endless species. His interest in photography goes back to his teenage years when he spent an entire summer working towards buying his first SLR camera. Originally from Yugoslavia, Marko taught himself photography in the field during and following his extensive formal education and subsequent business career. Marko graduated from the Faculty of Business and Economics (HEC) at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, and earned an MBA from Stanford University. Having travelled to over 110 countries, he is fluent in English, French, Spanish, Serbian/Croatian, and Portuguese, and is proficient in Italian and German. Marko is honoured to have his photos published and awarded in numerous magazines including Alert Diver, American Photo, Digital Foto, Islands, Nature’s Best Photography, Photographer’s Forum, Seacam, Showboats International and The Sunday Times. In addition to his photographic passion, Marko is an entrepreneur, investor, and public speaker. A highly sought-after expert in the field of emerging markets investments, he wrote Frontier Investor: How to Prosper in the Next Emerging Markets. Michael Spence, Nobel Prize Winner in Economics, hailed the book as “brilliant” and “a tour de force”.

Amos Nachoum is a wildlife photographer and explorer who has pioneered the photography of large animals. His up-close photographs of polar bears, orcas, leopard seals, anacondas, and countless sharks have raised awareness about the threat these species, commonly perceived as dangerous, are facing today. Amos’ career began as a war photographer in his native Israel. After experiencing the horrors of war, he has focused for the past 40 years on the beauty of nature and wildlife. His photos and essays have appeared in hundreds of publications around the globe, including National Geographic, Time, Life, The New York Times, Condé Nast Traveler, Le Figaro, Terre Sauvage, Airone, Mondo Somerso, Der Spiegel, Unterwasser, and many more. His work has also been included in the books The Living Ocean, The World of Nature, and Oceans. He has appeared on National Geographic Explorer, Today, and Good Morning America, and has been featured in People, Esquire, and Money magazines. Amos’ photography has won Nikon, Communication Arts, and BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards.
