About this book

An interdisciplinary approach is essential for the successful regeneration of brownfield sites. Such development embraces a wide range of issues including cleanup and economic redevelopment, legislation and the prominent roles of ownership and investment, the latter points being complicated by varying international approaches. Strong community participation is also involved. The ecological advantages may be obvious to all, but the benefits of reintegration of land into the economic cycle of the community need to be promoted strongly to take effect, as do the economic and social dimensions for the reinvigoration of cities. This book features papers presented at Brownfields 2002, the First International Conference on Assessment, Rehabilitation and Development of Brownfield Sites. Over 50 contributions on a broad range of engineering, science and land issues relating to brownfields are included. These are divided under the following headings: case studies; community and public involvement; environmental assessment; development issues; financial and insurance aspects; risk management; multimedia modelling and assessment; lessons from the field; and cleanup methodologies.

Section 1 Case studies: Case history of a "brownfields" site in Wichita, Kansas USA: innovative approaches to groundwater remediation; Monitoring the effectiveness of remediation: A case study from Homebush Bay, Sydney, Australia; Redevelopment potential of landfills. A case study of six New Jersey projects; City of Hopwell, Virginia - learning to deal with its industrial legacy; Successful redevelopment and risk management in Emeryville, California; Redevelopment of the former Shell Haven refinery; Remediation and redevelopment of the former highway maintenance yard, Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada; Process of integrating screening and detailed risk-based modeling analyses to ensure consistent and scientifically defensible results; The contribution of the reuse of historic naval and airforce sites to brownfields regeneration: filling in the 'white holes'; Unusual aspects of Arsenic distribution, in the area of the industrial district of Scarlino (Tuscany): problems connected with sulfuric acid production from pyrite. Section 2 Community and public involvement: Eco-industrial redevelopment of LA brownfields; Strategic communications can enhance brownfields public participation; Involving stakeholders to achieve successful development of brownfield sites; The brownfields cookbook: a redevelopment guide; White book of urban Spanish brownfields. Section 3 Environmental assessment: Public health role in redevelopment efforts; Environmental balancing of brownfield redevelopment; Brownfields contribution in managing urban sprawling and soil consumption in Brescia; Cost-effectiveness in polluted site sampling campaign. Section 4 Development issues: Brownfields development issues; Integrated concept for groundwater remediation INCORE; Smart growth and prosperity; The city of Muskegon Heights, Michigan. Section 5 Financial and insurance aspects: Value creation in the redevelopment of environmentally impaired properties; Economic aspects of polluted soil bioremediation. Section 6 Risk management: Sustainable management of groundwater resources with regard to contaminated land.
