About this book

Language: Spanish

Until the work of Perez (1999), and the subsequent publication of the work of Perez & Lopez (2002), the study of the continental mollusk fauna of Nicaragua had been addressed indirectly within the context of extensive regional studies of different types made at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. After the work of these two authors, in the 2000s, key publications were produced for the understanding of this taxonomic group in Nicaragua. The current book gives a systematization of all these publications after the aforementioned two publications, constituting the most current and complete work on the malacofauna verified for the Pacific region of Nicaragua.

The list of species that are distributed in the Nicaraguan Pacific region is presented here, and is composed of 94 taxa, distributed in 56 genera and 30 families; Of the 94 taxa cited, 81 species have been collection, with are 13 other species not having been collected. Of the 81 species collected, 48 are species previously cited for Nicaragua and 33 are new records. In addition, eight species were recorded that constitute possible new species for science. For each of the species a series of previously obtained field data is included, as well as bibliographic data that include its extension outside Nicaragua, distribution in Nicaragua, description of the shell, comments on morphology and / or distribution, habitat, abundance and data of each of the lots examined. They also include a photograph or drawing of the shell for each species, as well as anatomical data of the genital, jaw, radula or palial complex where applicable. According to the results obtained in the affinity analysis carried out, the study area constitutes a more or less homogeneous biogeographic unit, although three defined sectors can be discerned: a North-Western, a North-Central and a Southern sector, this third one further divisible into two subsectors, one south-western and another south-eastern.
