This catalogue provides a listing of all species observed up to 1996 in the Dipteran family Syrphidae, commonly known as hover flies or flower flies, from the Afrotropical region. In total, more than 700 African localities were identified from the literature. Of the total of 534 valid taxa reported, 265 are only known from their type locality. For 73 of the better described species distribution maps are included.
