The first National-level Forest Inventory (NFl) in Nepal was conducted in the early sixties by the then Forest Resources Survey Office under the department of Forests. The second NFl was accomplished by the Department of Forest Research and Survey (DFRS) in the nineties. At the time of publication of this report, the third NFI was in progress. Undertaken jointly by the DFRS and the FRA Nepal Project (2010-2014). This inventory covers the regions of the Terai, the Churia, the Middle-hills, the High Mountains and the High HimaI.

This report presents the results of the Churia forest resource assessment conducted during 2011-2013. This comprehensive report not only provides the information on growing stock and biomass, but also gives information on non-timber forest products, biodiversity and soil carbon content. A total of 281 tree species belonging to 177 genera and 71 families; 186 shrub species belonging to 116 genera and 51 families and 322 species of herbaceous plants (including flowering plants and pteridophytes) belonging to 226 genera and 75 families were recorded, as were 100 species of climbers and 11 species of epiphytic plants belonging to 26 families and 66 genera. A total of 666 different species of flora (240 trees, 144 shrubs, 187 herbs, 70 climbers, 22 ferns and 3 epiphytes) and 74 species of animal derivatives were used as non-timber forest products.

The results of the study indicates that the forest resources of the Churia region is decreasing as compared to the result of the previous inventory.
