A time expansion bat detector digitally records ultrasonic bat calls and then plays them back at a slower rate and frequency to give an audible output. Time expansion bat detectors can only record for a fraction of the time so bats can be missed, but the quality of the recordings is high and all frequencies are recorded simultaneously. This means that calls from quieter species and details of social calls and harmonics are preserved.
