About this book

This book contains colour photos of most of the species so far recorded in Assam with brief descriptions. It contains 1,160 photos (of which 713 are by the author). The success of previous pocket guides written by the author prompted him to embark on a similar format book for the birds of Assam. This book, however, evolved to be much bigger than a pocket guide. There are 876 species and 106 subspecies of birds in Assam listed in this book, including some 290 winter migrants from the northern latitudes. Of these, 12 are classified as Critically Endangered, 10 as Endangered, 31 as Vulnerable, and 50 as Near Threatened by the IUCN.

For comparison, the author's Checklist of the Birds of Assam (published in 1990 by Sofia Publishers) listed 796 species and 150 subspecies, reflecting changes in taxonomy in the intervening 35 years.
