About this book

A taxonomic revision is conducted on the Volutidae, a family of predatory sea snails, of southern and eastern Africa. Five Callioara species are recognized as valid species and discussed herein, along with the description of three new species. The genus Simililyria is accepted as a valid genus, with eight valid species, and describing two new species. The previously known southern African genus Athleta is investigated and revised, reclassified into three new genera, with 13 recognized valid species, and the description of 10 new species. A further two from middle and northern East Africa are mentioned along with two species from West Africa. A short discussion is conducted on the Festilyria, the Fusivoluta and the Neptuneopsis species. The coastal provinces and sub-provinces along the southern African coast are discussed as delimited by Veldsman (2019), with relation to the Volutidae occurrence.

New taxa are Afriathleta n. gen., Afriathleta leilaniae n. sp., Afriathleta trixiae n. sp., Afriathleta viljoenae n. sp., Nataliavoluta n. gen., Nataliavoluta everriculum n. sp., Nataliavoluta sagena n. sp., Capensisvoluta n. gen., Capensisvoluta ariejoostei n. sp., Capensisvoluta benguelensis n. sp., Capensisvoluta kuisebensis n. sp., Capensisvoluta lizekae n. sp., Capensisvoluta namaqua n. sp., Callipara afrileviathan n. sp., Callipara susmanae n. sp., Callipara transkeiensis n. sp., Simililyria susanae n. sp., and Simililyria sulizae n. sp.
