About this book

Language: English

From the preface:

"The research on descriptive anatomy of Indian timbers initiated by H.P. Brown during the 1930’s were continued even after independence by K.A. Chowdhury and others. Many such studies resulted in a number of publications on structure and identification of important commercial timbers on regional basis, especially from the Forest Research Institute (FRI) Dehra Dun and its sister organizations. Notable publications include West Bengal Commercial Timbers (Chowdhury, 1951), 36 Commercial Important Andaman Timbers (Purkayastha et al. 1976), South Zone Timbers (Agarwal and Pande, 1991, 1992) West Coast Timbers (Negi and Raturi, 1992), Anatomy of Little Known Andaman Timbers (Rao et al. 1993), wood anatomy of important commercial timbers of Assam with notes on their properties and uses (Pande, 2008). Furthermore, a comprehensive account on wood anatomy of legumes of India, their identification, properties and uses is also available (Chauhan and Rao, 2003).

Nagaland, one of the smallest states in India situated in the north-eastern corner of the country is rich in flora consisting of several important timber species besides bamboos and canes. The present publication deals with anatomical description along with properties and uses of 26 timber species of Nagaland. The basis of this anatomical study was commercial samples supplied by the Nagaland Forest Department. The information provided in this work will be useful for officials of the Forest Department, corporations, wood industries and others who use timbers of Nagaland. All the species described are provided with photomicrographs besides local and trade names. The document is prepared with the financial assistance of the Nagaland Forest Department and IWST. It is hoped that this publication will be useful to the timber users in general and State Forest Departments in particular."
