The French overseas territories and the oceanic areas bordering them are home to an exceptionally diverse marine birdlife. This atlas presents each territory and its marine birdlife through maps of the breeding areas of each species, a detailed presentation of the populations present, their numbers and their evolution, existing threats and the conservation actions undertaken. In the second part, each of the 139 breeding seabird species and subspecies is the subject of a complete monograph which places the species in a global context, shows the evolutionary trends in relation to known threats, and underlines France's responsibility for its conservation.

As defined here, the French overseas territories encompass islands in the Pacific, Indian, Southern, and Atlantic oceans and include Saint Pierre and Miquelon, the French West Indies (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Martin, and Saint Barthélemy), French Guiana, Mayotte, Réunion, the four Scattered Islands in the Indian Ocean (Îles Éparses in French), the French Southern and Antarctic Lands (including Adélie Land, Crozet Islands, Kerguelen Islands, and Saint Paul and Amsterdam Islands), New Caledonia, Wallis and Futuna, French Polynesia, and Clipperton Island.
