About this book

Language: Bilingual in English and Estonian

The new atlas brings together most of the data collected on the Estonian Flora over the last two centuries. 1664 maps depict the distribution of Estonian native plants, but also a large number of naturalised, escaped from cultivation and alien species, subspecies or hybrids.

Plant distribution is presented using a 6’ × 10’ (9 × 11 km) grid, commonly used in many European countries. Recent and historical finds are distinguished on the maps using four periods: 2006–2020, 1971–2005, 1921–1970 and up to 1920.

The distribution maps include information on species abundance trends, general distribution, proximity to range boundary, extinction threat and protection status. The atlas texts include information on species frequency in Estonia and, for many alien species, for instance, the locations and dates of the first and last finds and the name of the finder.

The fieldwork for the new atlas was carried out between 2014 and 2020 on the initiative of the botanists of the Estonian Seminatural Community Conservation Association with the joint input of Estonian amateur and professional botanists. Over 1900 amateur and professional botanists have contributed to the dataset of the latest period (2006–2020) with at least one observation or herbarium specimen. Altogether the atlas is based on over 2,100,000 observations, specimens and plant finds from the literature.

Summary in Estonian:
Uus taimeatlas võtab kokku suurema osa Eesti taimestiku kohta viimasel kahel sajandil kogutud teabest.
