About this book

Language: English

Please note: although containing a large number of colour photos of individual species, despite the book's title, it does not contain a dichotomous identification key to species.

From the preface:

"Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) has been engaged in several National and Internationally funded research projects on various aspects of bamboo. This compilation by the author is an exhaustive account of the morphological characters important for taxonomical identification of all bamboo species. The information provided is extracted from various published sources and wherever necessary new information is also added. A list of RET species of bamboos in the Western Ghats, bamboos in southern India, their importance and methods for preparation of bamboo herbariurn are also provided.

Identification of bamboos using multi-taxonomical aids like morphology, anatomy, and molecular biology will help to resolve the taxonomical enigma concerning bamboos of the world. For this, there is an urgent need for national, regional and global collaboration among taxonomists and the various users of bamboo and interaction and information exchange across taxonomists and a wide range of stakeholders.

It is hoped that this handbook will be useful for students and researchers alike in carrying out taxonomical studies on bamboo and to identify them."
