About this book

Language: Dutch

Many books on trees and shrubs use leaves, leaf buds, bark structure, and tree shape as diagnostic characters. There is comparatively little information on flowers, fruits, and seeds. This book is packed with detail on the flowering, fruiting, and seedling phases of Dutch trees and shrubs, using both clear texts and photos. The flowers of most trees are small and greenish and therefore hardly noticeable. Shrubs, on the other hand, often sport large and colourful flowers, often predominating the landscape in spring. Hawthorns and hackberry (Prunus padus) are good examples of this. It is not hard to recognize these genera, but both of these have multiple species in their respective genera, which are hard to identify. This basic guide offers help identifying these and other species.
