About this book

During the past quarter of a century, there has been a tremendous expansion in our knowledge of gastropod behaviour and neurobiology. We can understand, for example, a great deal about mammalian nervous systems by studying the relatively larger and simpler structure of the gastropod nervous system. This book first reviews the broader aspects of molluscan biology and draws attention to the special features of the gastropod nervous system. It then examines different types of behaviour, reviewing progress in understanding the mechanisms of neural control, and emphasizing cases in which control can be attributed to identified neurons and identified neural circuits.

... interesting and informative ... The production quality of the book is high and the figures and tables are clearly set out. The book as a whole yields a comprehensive overview of the current state of neurobiology and behaviour in gastropods, making it a suitable entry point into this integrative field and a useful reference book for graduate students and researchers. For persons not familiar with gastropods, and who want to learn more about the behaviour and its neural control in these animals, this book is an eye-opener, and I can hardly imagine a more attractive introduction to them. ISBE Newsletter Many people may think that the behaviour of snails is sluggish and that they have no brain at all; Chase's book cures this prejudice. ISBE Newsletter A clearly written, well researched compendium of modern research which should be in every university library and on the bookshelves of all invertebrate neurologists and behaviourists.
