About this book

Language: English

Northeast India occupies a momentous part in biodiversity evaluation and conservation. Due to decades of socio-political unrest, inaccessible terrain and lack of funds, the highly pristine habitats of this region remain unexplored and little documented. The rich cultural heritage of different ethnic population also remains unattended.

Population pressure in this region since partition has resulted in severe degradation of habitat and as such conservation measures at different levels become imperative. The primary response to the biodiversity crisis must therefore be effective management. Conservation action in the coming years must focus on ensuring the long-term persistence of the biodiversity rich areas. Living resources have a unique place in indigenous cultures. Therefore, species loss represents not only a loss of global biodiversity, but of cultural heritage as well. In short, many people and many species share a common vulnerability and struggle for survival.

Biodiversity Spectrum of Northeast India is the product of the National Seminar held under the aegis of Department of Zoology, Arya Vidyapeeth College, India, in 2009. In this venture, efforts have been made to address the problems and prospects of biological resource conservation and to record the bioresources of this region for sustainable use.
