Unlike other Andalusian wetlands, the Guadalhorce River Mouth Nature Place is located within the urban footprint of the city of Malaga. Despite its small size (70 hectares), the area contains an elevated proportion of the bird species found in Andalusia.

El principal valor del Paraje Natural es la riqueza de aves que alberga. A pesar de sus pequeñas dimensiones (67 hectáreas), en este espacio natural está representada una elevada proporción de las especies de aves acuáticas detectadas en Andalucía. En esta obra se describe la fenología de las 70 especies más fáciles de observar, las cuales han sido ilustradas, y el estatus de un total de 244 especies, lo que constituye el listado más completo y actualizado de las especies de aves presentes en el paraje.
