About this book

Language: Bilingual in English and French

This book is an annotated checklist of the 506 species (of which 155 are breeding, 103 presumed breeding and 86 species previously not considered) recorded in Mauritania.

This West African country is at the conjunction of the Sahara and the Sahel and the Palearctic and Afrotropics. The checklist provides data on status, phenology, distribution, habitat, nesting and the origin of migrants and winter visitors. In addition, the book gives information on the geography, the history of ornithology, the biogeographical affinities of the breeding birds, the bird migration system in Mauritania and a comprehensive biography.

The country includes the Banc d'Arguin (Africa's most famous wintering site for sub-arctic waders) as well as several major wetlands for Palearctic and Afrotropical waterbirds.
