Stone building was introduced into West Sussex first by the Romans, and later on a grand scale by the Normans. From the 11th to the mid 19th century, before the advent of easy transport by railway some 30 different types of vernacular building stones were quarried, and over 20 different types were imported by sea. The authors are both experienced geologists who have spent many years studying the rich heritage of the stone buildings of the West Sussex.
