Cats are the most adapted carnivores and have agile bodies built for speed. Teeth are specially designed to tear flesh, while sharp claws to hold the prey and strike. This outstanding adaptation for predatory life is matched by an acute hearing sense and large eyes provide excellent vision. The hunting method is to take the prey by surprise while remaining hidden and waiting for hours. Teeth are meant for eating meat and long incisors like canines enable the cats to seize, hold and bite the prey. On account of habitat loss and poaching, almost all members of the cat family are inching toward extinction. Particularly habitat loss is forcing the cats to shift to villages and human settlements where they have to compete with humans which results in a definite conflict between cats and humans.
The relationship and not conflict between people and cats lies at the heart of Cats of Himalayas which contains information about the fabulous wildlife, especially cats, and also throws light on recent cases of human-cat conflicts, while highlighting conservation measures to mitigate this problem.
