About this book

Language: French with English summaries

In China, the genera Cychrus, Calosoma and Carabus are represented by 646 species distributed in almost the whole of the country. By their aesthetic qualities, these insects are among the most beautiful beetles, but more importantly is that they have been studies for some two centuries to find out more about their evolution and speciation. Uusually wingless and with limited dispersal abilities, they are closely bound to specialized habitats and are valuable bioindicators of environmental quality, in particular the state of forests.

In this book, the author present up-to-date knowledge on the evolution and classification of these insects, taking into account the latest molecular analyses. Thus, the classification used follows from the results of the latest DNA studies. Biogeography of the Chinese genera is described, and a systematic catalog of all species is given, with updated details relevant to their nomenclature (type species, type locality, references), but also a comprehensive listing of all localities in China where their presence has been reported. The whole is illustrated with colour photographs and a bibliography consisting of 888 references.
