About this book

Language: French

Bats find their way around by echolocation to fly in the most perfect darkness. Even if these acoustic emissions are inaudible to us, they can be studied quite easily by appropriate means (recorders that display sonograms).

Michel Barataud has acquired unique knowledge and skills during more than three decades of continuous research into sound signals from bats, not only in Europe but also in Guyana and the Lesser Antilles. Drawing on his personal field experience and his ability to make the most of technological advances, he has developed an effective identification method and disseminated his results through a large number of publications. A dedicated teacher, he has trained several hundred bat enthusiasts in ultrasound analysis and has developed an extensive network of naturalists. In this book, he presents his methods of computer-assisted signal analysis to complement the auditory approach that he initially developed in France. Yves Tupinier is a pioneer of bioacoustics and a lifelong friend. His contribution to this book is a valuable addition.
