About this book

Language: English

This flora covers eight districts. A total of 1432 species, 641 genera and 120 families are included. It is totally based upon inputs from The Plant List and is perhaps the first full-fledged book incorporating this data. This has added more than 5 species to the Flora of India and 52 species to the Flora of Madhya Pradesh. The unique feature of the flora is names of Pious Trees, plants of 27 Nakshatras (constellations), 12 plants of the Zodiac signs, names of 24 plants under which the Jain Teerthankars obtained salvation, the trees of 9 planets, the Panchwati (group of 5 pious plants), wild relatives (germplasm) of cultivated plants, list of common avenue trees, ornamental plants and so on. In the chapter on methodology, the rationale behind splitting or grouping together of families according to the Plant List, e.g., The Malvaceae now contains Bombacaceae, Sterculiaceae and Tiliaceae, the characters of order Malvales, Verbenaceae now contains genera having racemose inflorescence, while those genera having cymose inflorescence are transferred to Lamiaceae (Gmelina, Tectona etc.). Leguminosae combines former Fabaceae, Caesalpiniaceae and Mimosaceae on the basis of monocarpellary gynoecium having marginal placentation and so on.
