About this book

From the preface:

"Many parts of the indian subcontinent are known for their rich biodiversity. Among these areas, the Himalayan belt harbors a considerable number of endemic species and also supports one of the largest fresh water habitats. Most of the remote areas in the Himalayan belt lack base-line data on the species richness and their detailed documentation. Moreover there are several research groups working on different aspects of biodiversity following certain traditional methodology. This book is an attempt to introduce latest
biotechnological techniques, tools and protocols available globally at present and also to document the information on some of the aquatic habitats in remote hills of the Himalaya.

Uttarakhand state is a vast emporium of natural resources and the state now is implementing various developmental programs such as hydropower projects for its overall growth. Scientific approaches have to be amalgamated with proper utilization of natural resources and then technology can impact the life of common man. Any technological intervention requires effective co-ordination between different organizations like universities, academic and research institutions, government agencies, non-governmental organizations and, above all, involving people participation as they are the end users of technology. To bring the baseline information on recent technologies being applied in biological sciences by scientists, researchers, technicians and skilled managers in a book form is a joint effort of Prof. J.P. Bhatt, Head, Department of Zoology & Biotechnology, HNB Garhwal University, Dr. Ashish Thapliyal, Head, Department of Biotechnology, Graphic Era University and Dr. Madhu Thapliyal, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, RCU Government PG College Uttarkashi.

Leading investigators have contributed towards this book. The authors had the freedom to choose the area of their expertise and present the best possible information in that area. The information contributed by these authors will expose & sensitize our new generation to the present scenario in biodiversity conservation, upcoming technologies and new research areas. It will also be a valuable reference tool on different methodologies for students in future."
