About this book

Language: Dutch

Stress is a physical conditions in which the body is out of balance as a consequence of small or large problems in our daily lives. If stress lasts too long it can cause illness (including depression, burn-out, cancer, and heart and vascular diseases) and prolonged absenteeism. Often, stress is directly linked to work situations, so it is not surprising that stress has become occupational disease number one in our modern society.

Although there have been many initiatives recently to prevent work stress, it remains a huge problem. Part of the reason for this is that anti-stress measures do not take into account the general biology of stress, nor its utility from a biological or evolutionary point of view.

In this book, biologist and stress researcher Dr Erwin van den Burg, gives an insighful account of the biology of stress using examples from the animal world. These examples help explain why people get stressed at work and provide a basis for possible measures to reduce work strees and absenteeism.

In addition to interesting parallels between animal stress and human work stress, Hoe Werkstress Werkt offers a range of practical tips and considerations for managers and employees to reduce work stress. The book is aimed at employees, stressed or otherwise, and anyone interested in what happens to the body during stress.
