This is the fourth of a seven-volume work on fungi in Europe, originally published between 1975 and 1993. This series has become the standard work in Italy on mushrooms, in total encompassing almost 5000 pages and over 3000 colour photos. It has been reprinted many times and has been translated into several languages. Each volume contains species profiles with warnings about confusion species and culinary instructions where appropriate.
Volume 4 was originally published in 1983 and illustrates 429 species.
