About this book

Language: Italian with bilingual introduction in English and Italian

This volume is the first part of a general work about the fossils shells from the Tuscan lower Pleistocene. The aim of the authors is to present a list and iconography for the greatest possible amount of molluscan species from the Tuscan Calabrian stage (~1.8 Ma – 781,000 years ago). The investigated outcrops are in the western end of Tuscany, Central Italy, in the provinces of Livorno and Pisa. For their importance within Pleistocene stratigraphic and molluscan Italian fauna, particularly for Tuscany, the authors believe that this book, containing material from carefully considered localities is widely signilicant at regional level for the lower Pleistocene Calabrian stage.

The authors collected fossil shells mainly in the surroundings of Fauglia, Nugola, and Riparbella (Pisa) while, for other species included in the general list, they refered to historical studies on the shells of Vallebiaia, Bagni do Casciana and Le Piane (Pisa) and Arena Labronica, Crocetta, Ponte Girante and Bacino do carenaggio della Torre del Fanale (province of Livorno). In some cases there are doubts about the presence of certain species in lower Pleistocene sediments, especially those coming from the fossil deposits of Livorno, due to the presence of strata with malacological fauna from the upper Pleistocene, Tyrrhenian stage, and such uncertainties are indicated with notes.

This first volume covers 92 gastropods, starting with the families Patellidae to Triviidae.
