About this book

Integrated Population Models: Theory and Ecological Applications with R and JAGS is the first resource on integrated population models, which constitute a powerful framework for combining multiple data sets from the population and the individual levels to estimate demographic parameters and population size. These models identify drivers of population dynamics and forecast the composition and trajectory of a population.

Contents

Part I: Theory of Integrated Population Models
1. Introduction
2. Basics of Bayesian Modeling
3. Introduction to Stage-Structured Population Models
4. Ingredients of Integrated Population Models
5. Introduction to Integrated Population Models
6. Benefits of Integrated Population Modeling
7. Assessment of Integrated Population Models
8. Integrated Population Models with Density-Dependence
9. Retrospective Population Analyses
10. Population Viability Analyses

Part II: Integrated Population Models in Practice
11. Dynamics of a Local Population of Woodchat Shrikes (Lanius senator)
12. Dynamics of a Black Grouse Population (Tetrao tetrix)
13. Inference from Age-at-Harvest Data
14. Dynamics of a Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) Population

Biography

Dr Marc Kéry is a Population Ecologist with the Swiss Ornithological Institute and a courtesy professor ("Privatdozent") at the University of Zürich/Switzerland, from where he received his PhD in Ecology in 2000. He is an expert in the estimation and modelling of abundance, distribution and species richness in "metapopulation designs" (i.e., collections of replicate sites). For most of his work, he uses the Bayesian model fitting software BUGS and JAGS, about which he has published two books with Academic Press (2010 and 2012). He has authored or co-authored 70 peer-reviewed articles and four book chapters. Since 2007, and for a total of 103 days, he has taught 23 statistical modelling workshops about the methods in the proposed book at research institutes and universities all over the world.

Michael Schaub works in the Swiss Ornithological Institute at Sempach in Switzerland.
