These are the proceedings of a seminar held on the 17th and 18th of March 1998 in Leiden, The Netherlands.

The objectives of this seminar were threefold:
- To contribute to the review of the new Criteria and Categories of Threatened Species, as developed by the Species Survival Commission (SSC) of the World Conservation Union;
- To discuss the application of the Criteria and Categories on national and regional Red Data Lists;
- To strengthen the network of SSC members in the Netherlands.
