Stratigraphy is that branch of geology which studies rock layers (strata) and layering (stratification). It is primarily used in the study of sedimentary and layered volcanic rocks. Stratigraphy and the relationship of rock layers and their ages has great practical application in fields as disparate as exploration geology and archeology.
