The birth of life is linked to us via a 3.8-billion-year story. Because there is lot of information on the shape of living organisms, we can find organisms with similar forms in the fossil record and approximate their biology. Using this kind of informed speculation, we can "revive" ancient creatures with a certain degree of certainty. In this book, ancient organisms are introduced with fossils and restored maps (imaginary diagrams), and their ecology and biology is using new information as much as possible. Why do they have this shape? Why were they able to rise to the top of their ecosystem in a particular era? Why have they become extinct? Imagine reviving the creatures in your mind's eye, that is the purpose of this book.

生物の形に関する情報は膨大なストックがあるので、化石と類似した形態をもつ生物を現生種から見つけ、機能などを推定することができます。そういった分析のもと、ある程度の確からしさで、太古の生物を「蘇らせる」ことができるのです。本書では、古代生物を化石と復元図(想像図)で紹介し、その生態について、できる限り新しい情報を用いて解説しました。どうしてこんな形をしているのか? どうしてその時代の生態系の頂点に君臨できたのか? どうして絶滅してしまったのか? などと想像していただき、みなさんの頭のなかに生物たちを「蘇らせる」ことができれば、本書の目的は達成できたものと考えています。
