Es war nicht etwa ein erhellender Geistesblitz oder gar nur die Person Charles Darwin, welche den Gedanken der Evolution in die Naturwissenschaften einführte. Vielmehr waren es zunehmende Kenntnisse über Naturdinge und Naturphänomene, welche die Entwicklung von Evolutionstheorien geradezu notwendig machten. Bemerkenswert ist allerdings die Tatsache, dass naturwissenschaftlich-kausale Erklärungen über den Ablauf der Evolutionsgeschichte auch im späten 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert kaum Einzug in die Evolutionsbiologie fanden. Manfred Grasshoff ist Mitbegründer der Frankfurter Evolutionstheorie, die am Senckenberg Forschungsinstitut in Frankfurt am Main in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jh. entwickelt wurde, und die sich mit eben diesen Aspekten befasst, indem Lebewesen als organismische Konstruktionen, als energiewandelnde Gefüge verstanden und dargestellt werden.
