About this book

Language: French

This guide to lampreys in Western Europe brings together for the first time information to help identify the sea lamprey (P. marinus), the river lamprey (L. fluviatilis) and the brook lamprey (L. planeri). The first part looks at the history of lamprey development, their main biological features and their geographic distribution. The second part contains key data on orientation and identification for recognising the lamprey during its different life stages in fresh water. These key facts are presented in the form of illustrated cards, and provide guidance for the reader to minimise the risks of mistaken identification, even advising carrying out a genotype test in certain cases.

The third part describes the specific features of the areas where spawning grounds are located and the areas where larvae of the different species grow and fatten, based on recent data. Tables and charts summarise the expert knowledge required to help managers recognise and protect lamprey habitats in the course of their different life stages. Some practical advice is given in the appendices on observing habitats, and capturing and examining lampreys.

This guide is targeted mainly at operators in the field in charge of environmental management, specialist departments and also naturalists, teachers and researchers.
