Tinbergen was a complex and interesting character, a pioneer in the field of animal studies, who also published controversial research into the problems of childhood autism. The fact that it is now possible to analyse the behaviour of animals in their natural environment with rigour and precision is due in no small part to Tinbergen. This book has been written by a fellow scientist and friend, who knew him well and worked with him closely.
