About this book

Language: German, with bilingual abstract in English and German

Intensive research for elasmobranchian remains in sediments of the Gebel Dist Member of the Bahariya Formation (Late Cenomanian) in the oasis of Bahariya (Egypt) yielded a rich fauna. A total of 22 elasmobranchian taxa are recorded, of which twelve species, seven genera and one family are described for the first time.
Another new species cruciformis from the Cenomanian of the Woodbine Formation of Texas is attributed to the newly erected genus Sechmetia, which is represented in the Gebel Dist Member by its type species aegyptiaca (Stromer 1927).

Related species of further genera and Carcharoides planidens are common to the Woodbine Formation and the Gebel Dist Member. The occurrence of these related species, together with the possible index taxon Carcharoides planidens, seems to be indicative for nearshore environments in Cenomanian tropical to warm humid climate zones.

Palaeoecological considerations of the fauna confirm the sedimentation of the Gebel Dist Member in various facies of a strongly tidal influenced estuarine environment.
