Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles

The Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles (SSAR) is the largest international organisation dedicated solely to the study of herpetology.

Founded by two teenaged enthusiasts, Kraig Adler, then aged 16, and David M Dennis, 17, as the Ohio Herpetological Society in the 1950s, the name was changed to the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles in 1967, and the society has since won a worldwide reputation for its publications, meetings and conservation work.

SSAR’s large catalogue includes the well known and wide ranging Herpetological Circulars, regional guides to reptiles and amphibians, facsimile reprints of famous and still relevant historic works, and practical guides to reptile and amphibian conservation. SSAR has also taken on publication of the acclaimed series Biology of the Reptilia, the first of which appeared in 1969.
