About this book

Haida Gwaii / The Queen Charlotte Islands are Canada's most western islands. This book aids in identifying the nesting songbirds of the island and covers 35 species. It excludes migrants, vagrants, or other species (for example ducks, hawks, and owls). Each species entry contains a short description covering their status and general appearance, vocalisations, habitat, and nesting behaviour. Two appendices cover birds recorded at feeders, and a compiled data set of bird surveys done on the island, covering the years 1989 to 2004.

Media reviews

"What shines through every page of this charming book is its author's love of the birds she describes. By turns affectionate, amused and impassioned, Margo Hearne knows these birds--and cares for them-- as though they were members of her own family, which in the largest sense they are. If all humans were like her, we would have no environmental crisis. Janetta Pirt's deft and delicate illustrations beautifully complement the text."
- Silver Donald Cameron, sailor and author of The Living Beach

"Margo's passion for life, nature and all God's creatures is infectious... Janetta Pirt's art offers a visual banquet of the birds of the forest."
- Canon Peter Hamel, Canada's record holder for most bird species seen in a single year
