About this book

This was presented as an "on the cutting edge" workshop at Cornell University and the Paleontological Research Institution, Ithaca, NY, during July 30-August 3, 2009. The present volume represents one step in this effort by showcasing what paleontologists can do in the classroom and providing resources and models that other instructors can use to develop their own innovative teaching strategies. The contributions are arranged into three sections. First is a section on course design, with five chapters that describe approaches to defining and structuring a paleontology course. The second section presents four contributions on teaching evolution as part of a college-level paleontology course. The third and final section contains eight chapters on active learning approaches.
