About this book

Language: Russian with English summary

This book compiles all the available data on amphibians living in the Far East of Russia within the Primorsky and Khabarovsk Territories, the Amur, Chita, Magadan, Kamchatka and Sakhalin Regions, the Jewish Autonomous Region, and the Aginsk Buryat, Chukchi and Koryak Autonomous Areas. The physical geography of the region, the history of the study of amphibians (including the traditional ideas of the indigenous peoples of the Far East), the composition and history of fauna, the general features of the structure and dynamics of the multi-species assemblages of amphibians, the problems of population reduction and the protection of species, and in particular the role of reserves in protection are described. Keys for identification of eggs, larvae and adults are given. For each of the 11 species (2 Caudata and 9 Anura), information is provided on taxonomy, the systematic status of names, the external morphology of adults, larvae and eggs, distribution (with point maps of habitats and complete cadastres for each region), ecology (biotope distribution, abundance, activity, wintering, thermal biology, reproduction, development, nutrition, natural enemies, and parasites), the influence of anthropogenic factors, and existing and necessary measures of protection. Doubtful and potentially possible species are discussed. Colour photographs of all species are given in different phases of the life cycle, taking into account individual variability. The reference list contains 856 entries.
