These are Red listed under four categories, Critically Endangered (17 species), Endangered (32 species), Vulnerable (22 species) and Near Threatened (7 species). The actual causes and extent of decline of each of the 78 threatened species of Indian amphibians along with their brief description, coloured illustration to show the colour patterns, habit, habitat and distribution are given so that students, teachers, researchers, policy makers and the scientific community as well as the general public come to know about each and every threatened species and why they are declining. This will help in the conservation of the threatened Indian amphibians about whom so little is known that many species are vanishing before even scientists are getting the opportunity to properly study their biology.
