About this book

One of the great groups of Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary angiosperm pollen is the Triprojectates, including the genera Aquilapollenites, Triprojectus, Mancicorpus, Novemprojectus, Reticorpus, Parviprojectus, Retroprojectus gen. nov., Integricorpus, Costaprojectus gen. nov., Pseudoaquilapollenites, Striaticorpus, Bratzevaea, Jiangsupollis, Cranwellia, Striatellipollis, Scollardia, Glaberprojectus gen. nov., Translucentipollis, Farabeipollis, Laevicorpus and related forms. The group is mainly restricted geographically to northern paleolatitudes, has a history of rapid evolution allowing for its great usefulness in biostratigraphy, and it is a relatively common element in the Late Cretaceous fossil assemblages of northern latitudes. The present report details the group's occurrence in western and northern Canada with some information coming from the northem United States including a summary of the morphological types encountered, their stratigraphic and geographic occurrence within the Westem Interior Sedimentary Basin, and comparisons of the assemblages with others around the globe. A number of taxonomic issues are dealt with including classification within the group and related forms. New taxa encountered are described and a number of new combinations are proposed. A summary of the published taxa is provided.
