About this book

Language: English

From the preface:

"The Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB) was established in 1988 under the umbrella of the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) with a view to reorganize forestry research set up in the country. The Institute is mandates to identify and evolve varieties of species used in afforestation and social forestry programmes, thereby contributing to productivity increase from forest plantations and agro-forestry systems for the benefit of farming communities and wood-based industries, particularly in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep, which are covered under the Institute's jurisdiction.

In 20 years, the Institute has worked on forestry research issues relating to productivity, biodiversity, conservation, forest health, restoration, and bioprospecting. The idea of Two Decades of Research in IFGTB (1988-2008) is to transmit the research findings from the Institute in the areas of tree breeding, genetics, biotechnology, nursery techniques, plantation management, physiology, seed technology, pest & disease problems, ecosystem restoration, species recovery, etc. to the end users viz., the field foresters and farming community. The findings have immense use in applied forestry and for improving the field practices for tree cultivation."
