About this book

Language: German

An up-to-date book on the Earth's vegetation has been long overdue. Vegetation der Erde contains exact and concise descriptions of all the vegetation types of our planet. The focus of the authors is on conveying the causal relationships between the habitat of characteristic (representative) plant species and plant communities on the one hand, and evolutionary, historical, temporal, spatial, ecophysiological, and anthropogenic conditions on the other. The focus is on areas that have been relatively little or not affected by anthropogenic stressors. But the authors also consider cultured vegetation, which today occupies a larger fraction of land area fraction in climatic or edaphic favorable regions .

The opening chapter contains an accessible introduction to the rationale behind the vegetation ecological classification of the earth's surface. The common thread are the living conditions of the zonal, extrazonal and azonal vegetation of the plains and mountains, beginning in the equatorial humid tropics and ending in the polar regions. Many tables, vivid graphics and a variety of photos illustrate this book. Text boxes provide space for additional information about specific topics. An extensive bibliography provides easy access to more detailed publications.

Vegetation der Erde is an outstanding work- and textbook for lecturers, students of biology, ecology, geography, and related disciplines, as well as for all those who deal professionally or privately with the vegetation of the world.
