In de Nederlandse kustwateren en estuaria komen meer dan 150 veelvoorkomende vissoorten voor. De meesten weten hoe een zeebaars eruitziet, maar onderscheid maken ­tussen verschillende soorten zeegrondels, zandspieringen en jonge platvissen is een stuk lastiger. De huidige literatuur is verouderd, incompleet en mist een praktische benadering om vissen direct in het veld te herkennen. Daarom is er behoefte aan een toegankelijke veldgids om onze kustvissen op naam te brengen. Door technologische en wetenschappelijke ontwikkelingen in de afgelopen decennia is er een schat aan nieuwe informatie bij gekomen. Die is gebundeld in deze veldgids.
