This 4 CD-set is the first in a series of CDs about the voices of the Amazon birds (and some mammals). It includes 340 bird species and 7 species of primates. (English, Portugese and scientific names for each species, followed by the type of vocalization (song, call, etc.). Excellent recordings with a minimum of two recordings per species. Most recordings were made in the region of Manaus. It covers the north of Manaus including the Guyanas (Surinam, French Guiana, Guyana) and part Venezuela.

With 40 page booklet in English and Portugese, with extensive documentation of each recording (what song, where, when, who made the recording). This is volume 1. Volume 2 and 3 are under preparation.

The terra firme (dryland, not annually flooded) forests of Amazonia harbor the highest niodiversity in earth. However, visitors walking through the rainforest are often surprised by how few species of birds they see. On the other hand, the number and variety of sounds heard at dawn can be overwhelming.
The goals of this compilation of the bird sounds of the forests north of Manaus are to cultivate an appreciation of the world of natural sounds and to provide a tool to decipher this enormous and hidden diversity.

The forests north of Manuas represent one of the most intensively studied areas in the Brazilian Amazon. Their avifauna has been well studied, leading to one of the few accurate and relatively complete species lists for an Amazonian locality. The great majority of bird species present north of Manaus also occurs in the Brazilian states of Amapa and northern Para, and in the neighboring countries of Guyana, Suriname, French Guyana and the department of Bolivar in Venezuela.

In general aquatic species are excluded, for which vocal identification is hardly ever necessary. Also omitted are some non-breeding migrants, which seldom vocalize here. Birds of the typical flooded forests and white-sand savannas will be the subject of future compilations.
