About this book

Texas is the second largest state and includes range-limits of many species of spiders and also has part of its border adjoining Mexico. The climate varies from subtropical in South Texas, to temperate conditions in the panhandle; and from desert in the west, to swamp in the east. ZooKeys 570: Catalogue of Texas spiders lists 1,084 species in 311 genera from 53 families currently recorded. Willis Gertsch & Stanley Mulaik published a list of spiders in Texas in 1940 describing 17 new species in 9 families and provided distribution for species in 17 select families. Gertsch described 86 species from Texas in the 1930's. In 1970 Bea Vogel published a Bibliography of Texas Spiders based on literature records with distribution records for 499 valid species. That was the first publication that provided a resource for taxonomic sources. This catalogue includes a list of taxonomic resources and data from previously published papers, records from taxonomic revisions and collections housed in Texas. Data includes distribution, locality, caves, time of activity, habitat, and collecting method. Forty-six theses and dissertations have been published on spiders in Texas from 12 different colleges/universities.
