In the preparation of a monograph of the diatoms of the Adriatic Sea basin for the period of 1896 to 2019, 549 diatom taxa classified into 90 genera were recorded from a total of 139 sites. At one site alone, as many as 136 (24.7%) taxa were recorded. The genera with the highest number of identified taxa are Navicula (48 taxa), Gomphonema (37 taxa), Nitzschia (35 taxa), Pinnularia (32 taxa), then Fragilaria (24 taxa), Eunotia (20 taxa), Cymbella (19 taxa), Surirella (17 taxa), and Diatoma and Cocconeis (14 taxa each). Based on Lange-Bertalot and Steindors (1996) and Lange-Bertalot and Rumrich (2000); on the taxa endangerment data, 91 (16.5%) and 81 (14.7%) taxa, respectively, fall inside the category of taxa which are confirmed not endangered, 53 (9.6%) not endangered but in regression, 19 (3.45%) endangered, 22 (4%) probably endangered, 7 (1.27%) very endangered, 11 (2%) very rare, 5 (0.9%) not found in Germany and for 17 taxa (3.09%) data is deficient.
According to the ecological data, 75 (13.6%) of taxa fall into the category of mesotrophic to eutrophic water, 66 (0.18%) from oligotrophic to eutrophic, 30 (5.45%) oligotrophic (without special features), 24 (4.36%) oligotrophic limestone water, 17 (3.09%) oligotrophic acidic water, 13 (2.36%) halophiles, 7 aerophiles and 1 oligo to aerophile. According to the saprobic value index, it ranged from 0.1 to 2.9 (Sladecek,1986), 1-2.9 (Wegl, 1983), 1-3.4 (Rott, 1997). Indicator values based on the Croatian trophic diatom index (TIDRH) ranged between 1 to 5 (Plenković-Moraj et al., 2009), and based on the Rott index from 0 to 5 (Rott, 1999).
Based on all of the above, the authors conclude that there is a large number of diatom taxa in the region of the Adriatic Sea basin, which, along with the diatoms of the marine area (Neum), amounts to 1086 taxa. A complete and comprehensive text of the diatoms flora of Bosnia and Herzegovina has never been written. Despite published scientific and professional papers by local and foreign authors, it has not been possible to list all the diatoms recorded in Bosnia and Herzegovina so far. This monograph will at least partially fill that void. All of the information was collected from the literature, and probably some of the earlier results need to be checked. It remains for us to confirm or deny these records. This book represents the first list of diatoms in the region and will be supplemented in the next edition with the list of diatoms and non-diatom taxa from the remaining regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
