About this book

Many great safari guides are often very detailed and written for adults, while most wildlife books for children only talk about well-known animals such as elephants, giraffes and lions. This book is something in between – while it covers all mammals that can be found in East Africa (Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi), plus a few iconic reptiles and birds, it is meant to be easy to read and does not require a degree in zoology to understand... after all, we can only protect what we understand.

This book is written for children, teenagers and adults of all ages and a perfect introduction to the wildlife of East Africa – it is equally suitable to be read at home while dreaming of Africa, or, for the lucky ones, to be used as a guidebook on a safari.

Raised in Germany, Birgit Hendry was caught by the travel bug early on and has lived half of her life as an expat – in South Africa, Tanzania, Switzerland, and now in Scotland. After graduating in Germany with a master's degree in geography (Diplomgeographin), she moved to Tanzania in 1999, where she spent years in the bush mapping wildlife areas. Painting and drawing in her spare time, her works have been exhibited in Germany, Morocco, Tanzania and South Africa. Combining her experience in different countries, her geographic studies and her passion for photography, writing, art and design, she currently works as a freelance writer and designer on a variety of projects for clients all over the globe.
