About this book

The first comprehensive identification guide dedicated to the plants of this island group (the political entity is named after the principal island, Grenada), aimed to fill a local need for a picture-based plant guide and to promote field identification as an activity, while satisfying the demands of the botanically curious tourist.

The book covers 75% of the 1000 vascular plant species in Grenada (mostly flowering plants and ferns). Many smaller herbs, mosses and aquatics are excluded. Alien plants are included if they appear to be ecologically at home in the landscape. Misidentification can result from insufficient illustrations, so the book contains a huge number of colour photographs as well as mentioning non-illustrated species which might be confused. The species notes combine botanical accuracy and ecological context with points of cultural and historical interest to make an excellent companion to the islands and their flora.

The book is the result of a Field Guide Research Project, sponsored by the Oxford-based Forest Research Programme of the UK Department for International Development.
