Bill Hambleton came to KU in 1947 to do his doctoral work in geology. His dissertation, a study of Kansas coals, was published by the Kansas Geological Survey in 1951. He then accepted a teaching position in the Department of Geology at KU. ln addition to teaching his courses, he ran the KU geology field camp in Colorado for several summers. In 1954 he joined the Kansas Geological Survey as the Assistant Director and worked his way up to State Geologist/Director in 1970. Although he did not publish extensively, he directed the research and service of the Survey until he retired in 1986. He then pursued his interests in art by serving as a docent at the Spencer Museum of Art at KU. His influence in the university, state, and nationally was much and his accomplishments many. He left a viable organization at KU that is still active and productive today.
