Twenty full-colour plates and species accounts of African plants appear in this peer-reviewed biennial series, which has become a collector’s item of the African, specifically South African, flora. This volume is dedicated to Prof. Neil R. Crouch, prolific author of over 370 papers and books on various botanical topics and former recipient of the Rudolf Marloth Medal of the Botanical Society of South Africa for his work towards popularising the flora of South Africa.
Contributions to this colourful edition include the striking Securidaca longepedunculata; seven kalanchoes; Aloe davyana var. magdae, which was illustrated by the artist (Magda Nel) after whom the taxon was named; the minute Streptocarpus decipiens with its enigmatic story of rediscovery after more than half a century; and many more. With an emphasis on the Waterberg region in South Africa, other interesting species featured include Hibiscus waterbergensis, Gloriosa rigodifolia and Thesium celatum – the first ever Thesium species to be featured in FPA.
The botanical art includes plates by a variety of highly accomplished botanical artists, namely, Gillian Condy, Lesley Deysel, Magda Nel, Gail Irene de Smidt (with her painting of Agapanthus coddii featured on the cover), Isabelita van Zyl and Jenny Hyde-Johnson. A guide for authors and artists, and an index to species are also included.
